You're gonna need a bigger boat.

Leading with the future in mind

What do you do?

Moments like these bring me back to a singular resource:

David Noble and Carol Kauffman's book, "Real-Time Leadership: Find Your Winning Moves When the Stakes are High." Why? Because their protocol for slowing down, preparing for, and making real-time decisions is that good. Their MOVE Framework teaches us to:

  • (M) Be mindfully alert

  • (O) Generate options

  • (V) Validate our vantage point

  • (E) Engage and effect change

Think of the image above: if “The Calling” sculpture is your present and the Milwaukee Art Museum is your near future, that blue Lake Michigan horizon? That’s the future we’re not yet ready for—but we’ll need to be.

Time to Build the Boat

If we want to sail beyond what’s visible now, we need to build the capacity today. Whether you’re deep in strategic planning or simply trying to reorient your team, pause and ask:

  • What are we assuming about the current state of our work?

  • What trends are emerging that could reshape everything?

  • What outdated assumptions will we need to release soon?

Let’s Gaze Into the Horizon Together

If your team is:

  • Caught in the weeds of daily operations... I can support you with horizon mapping.

  • Unsure how to plan for emerging challenges... I can help surface new insights and possibilities.

  • Struggling to align vision with action... I can guide you through strategic thinking that builds momentum.

Curious what horizon you're leading from? Let’s explore it together. Schedule a time to explore how we can work together to expand your teams development and strategic leadership.
